Portland parks are often forested and part of a neighborhood. Playgrounds and off-leash areas are close in; campsites start toward the gorge and the coast range.
Playgrounds tend to sit under firs inside neighborhood parks, so they stay usable on hot days and muddy after rain. The equipment is in the park, not a separate attraction.
Off-leash areas are usually inside larger parks, and the ground stays soft through the wet months. A towel matters if you care about the car.
Campsites are not in the city grid. The closer ones are toward the Columbia Gorge and the forest west of town, so this search looks farther out.
Covered and uncovered tables are common in neighborhood parks, which matters when the weather turns. Many share a lawn with a playground.
Washington Park (4.7): Portland's best single park if you want gardens, shade, and a playground in one stop. Powell Butte Nature Park (4.2): A wilder park in the city, better for a walk than a playground.
