Chicago's parks are a neighborhood grid plus the lakefront, not a ring of state parks in town. Playgrounds and dog areas are in the city; camping means leaving it.
Playgrounds are in almost every neighborhood park, from a small lot to a fieldhouse. Lakefront parks get the breeze and the crowds.
Dog parks are fenced areas inside larger parks, including a few near the lake. They are busiest after work and on the first warm weekends.
There is no real camping in the neighborhoods. This wider search looks past the city toward the forest preserves and the closer campgrounds beyond them.
Picnic groves are a Chicago habit: tables inside the big parks, some reserved and some first-come. Weekday tables are the easy find.
Lincoln Park (4.6): The lakefront park that actually has playgrounds, not just a skyline. Grant Park (4.1): The downtown park. Better for a walk between things than a long picnic.
